Louis Vuitton × Stephen Sprouse Keepall 50 M48605, Monogram Roses Canvas Travel Bag, 2009 Tribute Collection

Stephen Sprouse's oversized neon roses bloom across the Keepall 50, the one format large enough to let them behave like painting rather than pattern. Made for Louis Vuitton's 2009 tribute to the artist, this M48605 is near-unused, with vivid color, pale natural leather and its padlock, name tag and storage bag.

The Piece

Stephen Sprouse holds a singular place in modern Louis Vuitton history. His earlier work with Marc Jacobs established that the Monogram could be disrupted, painted over and reinterpreted rather than kept untouchable. After his death in 2004, the Maison revisited his vocabulary for the 2009 Stephen Sprouse Tribute Collection, including the Monogram Roses pieces; the Keepall 50 originally retailed at approximately $1,780 in the United States and has since become one of the series' most recognizable large-format bags.

The roses are monumental. Hot pink, coral, red, soft rose and leaf green, edged with black shadowing, stretch across whole sections of the bag, crop at the seams and continue around the corners, as though the Keepall had been cut from a much larger painting. Beneath them the brown Monogram, with its LV initials and flowers, stays visible: the heritage pattern supplies order, the roses interrupt it, and the bag reads differently from across a room than it does at arm's length.

Under the artwork is one of Louis Vuitton's most enduring travel designs: a cylindrical duffle with dual rolled natural cowhide handles, leather chapes and central reinforcement bands, a double-zip closure, gold-tone hardware and a soft, spacious single-compartment interior built for weekend packing. The traditional structure and the exuberant surface pull against each other, and that tension is the point. On this example the natural leather shows only slight tanning, keeping a fresh contrast between pale trim and bright blossoms.
