Few objects make the Maison's trunk-making philosophy as legible as a wardrobe that stands on end. Bought new in Munich in 2005 and kept by a single owner purely for display, this Secretaire Linge closes into a sober Monogram column and opens into an engineered interior of trays and compartments.
The Piece
The Secretaire Linge M11010 is a freestanding vertical wardrobe trunk, a malle armoire in the French vocabulary, approximately 110 cm tall, 54 cm wide and 54 cm deep. Closed, it presents as a tall trunk in brown Monogram canvas with brass-tone hardware, leather-edged construction and traditional trunk proportions. Opened, the vertical space divides into functional zones, and the piece behaves far more like a portable cabinet than a suitcase, with the presence of a narrow cabinet and a relatively compact footprint when displayed upright.
The body is reinforced with leather edging, metal corner protectors, riveted perimeter construction, multiple clasps, central lock hardware, side hinges and a leather carrying handle. The photographs show an interior of stacked storage sections, fitted trays, shallow compartments, central organization modules and larger open zones, a layered system for clothing and personal effects. That pale interior contrasts with the dark brown and warm ochre Monogram palette, aged gold-tone hardware and medium brown leather outside, so the storage architecture becomes immediately legible when the trunk stands open.
Its recent history is unusually clear. The trunk was purchased from Louis Vuitton in Munich in 2005 and has had one owner since, who kept it on display in the company's showroom rather than using it for travel.
Louis Vuitton founded his Paris Maison in 1854 after training as a professional packer and trunk maker, and the house built its earliest reputation on solving the practical problems of international travel rather than on handbags. Wardrobe trunks, which had to work simultaneously as luggage and furniture, became among the most sophisticated expressions of that philosophy, and the Secretaire Linge carries the lineage into a much later period. Shown closed, it reads as Monogram, proportion, hardware and disciplined geometry; shown open, as craftsmanship and function, at home in a dressing room, fashion archive, private residence, boutique, hotel suite or gallery.
