Closed, it is a vast grid of Monogram, wood and brass; opened, a cabinet of drawers and trays lined in warm orange. Older than a century, it feels less like something one carries than something one arrives with, and its later relining forms part of a candid restoration history.
The Piece
This antique Monogram wardrobe trunk, more than 100 years old and bearing identifying number 0647650, was conceived as a portable cabinet for the grand age of rail and ocean travel. At about 111 cm wide, 66 cm high and 55 cm deep, its broad rectangular body opens into an elaborate interior of drawers, trays and compartments, giving it the presence of furniture rather than luggage.
The exterior presents historic Monogram across a deeply aged brown field, divided by horizontal and vertical wooden battens into a strong grid and reinforced by brass-tone metal fittings, rows of rivets, corner guards, central reinforcement, historic locks and carrying hardware. Wood framing, leather components, fitted cabinetry and textile lining complete a construction closer to compact furniture than to modern luggage. Initials are present on the trunk.
The interior carries a documented restoration history. The trunk originally incorporated hanging storage on the right side, which now holds a six-drawer section, and the drawer system has since been repaired or adapted; the lining has been renewed in orange. The left side holds an upper tray, two upper drawers, a middle drawer, two lower drawers and a bottom drawer. The exterior keeps far more of its historic character, while the interior represents a later functional intervention, treated here as part of the trunk's history rather than disguised.
Louis Vuitton founded his Maison in Paris in 1854 after training as a trunk maker and packer, and large fitted wardrobe trunks represented the culmination of that thinking: luggage that could stack, resist impact, protect garments and survive ships and railways. Displayed closed, this one reads as a monumental Monogram chest; open, as a historical wardrobe cabinet for a dressing room, boutique or fashion archive.
