Two complete works of Japanese wearable art share one body. An anime-influenced oiran with dragon, tiger and goldfish fills one face; the reverse unfolds a Hokusai-inspired Great Wave with Mount Fuji and cherry branches. Believed to have been produced in an edition of only 50 pieces, it is a centerpiece among contemporary sukajan.
The Piece
Most reversible jackets pair one elaborate face with a simplified alternative. Here both sides were conceived with independent visual identities, distinct palettes and densely embroidered narrative programs, two statement jackets in one. The pink-and-black face is intimate, glamorous and character-driven; the black-and-teal face is expansive and elemental, sea, snow, mountain, sky and falling blossoms in the vocabulary of Katsushika Hokusai's wave imagery. One is built on personality and ornament, the other on nature and motion, and cherry blossoms thread through both, binding beauty, seasonality and impermanence. Its appeal reaches beyond streetwear into embroidered textile art, anime-inspired fashion, ukiyo-e revival design, Japonisme and tattoo culture.
The pink-and-black side centers on a monumental courtesan inside a circular yellow-gold field. Her face is worked in pale silver-white with finely shaped black brows, elongated lashes, vivid pink-red eye shadow and small red lips, recognizably anime-influenced yet grounded in classical oiran imagery. Her black hair rises into an elaborate coiffure with long ornamental hairpins, a gold comb, a red-and-gold ornament, blue floral clusters, curved metallic accents and fine linear embroidery suggesting lacquered strands. One raised hand holds a slender kiseru-style pipe, an adult, worldly detail of the high-ranking courtesan rather than the youthful maiko. Below, a floral kimono in crimson, burgundy, gold, turquoise, mint green and earth tones, with blue blossoms, red camellia-like flowers, gold blooms and metallic outlines, nests a textile within a textile. Behind her the gold circle, which may be read as moon, screen, fan field or abstracted ground, is crossed by a white cloud form and multicolored bands, and pink sakura drift in blush, rose and metallic thread across the scene, the density of a folding screen or theatrical poster.
On the front of this face the torso stays largely black so that two chest emblems command attention: a dragon in pearl white, pale gold, silver, rose pink and dark outline, open-mouthed with curling neck, and opposite a roaring tiger head in gold, black, ivory and red. Dragon and tiger are among the most powerful paired motifs of East Asian visual culture: sky and earth, fluid movement and physical power, spiritual energy and material strength, transformation and courage, two rival but balanced forms of authority, here a symmetrical visual armor. Both rose-pink sleeves carry vertical compositions of goldfish with rounded gold bodies, pale pink and ivory fins, red outlines and flowing tails among green leaves and pink blossoms, running from upper arm to cuff beside black central strips; goldfish, admired in Japanese decorative arts and summer festival culture for elegance, abundance and refinement, belong like the oiran to a world of display and cultivated beauty. The rose is neither baby pink nor neon but a muted metallic tone, dusty in shadow and glowing under direct light, anchored by black.
The reverse turns to glossy black satin with deep teal raglan sleeves and shoulder panels, black ribbing with teal stripes, and a cool, aquatic, moonlit palette. A monumental blue-and-white wave rises from the lower body, its crest dividing into many small hooked, claw-like tips after Kanagawa-oki nami ura, Hokusai's Great Wave off Kanagawa, built in midnight navy, royal blue, cobalt, sky blue, pale ice blue, silver-white, bright white foam and black contour, with thread direction, raised outlines and metallic highlights giving the water physical relief. Smaller waves roll across the hem and white spray fills the black sky. Mount Fuji sits low on the horizon in silver, white and muted blue, still and stable, while narrow boats in metallic gold and dark blue cross the water, small and vulnerable against it. Above, brown and charcoal cherry branches carry white, pale pink and rose blossoms across the upper body, meeting across the zipper when closed, and petals fall onto the teal sleeves, which shift between dark emerald, peacock blue and petrol green, their black upper panels scattered with blossoms that lighten toward the cuff.
This is a contemporary collector sukajan rather than an occupation-era souvenir jacket: its manga-like portrait, full reversible narrative structure, complex computer-guided embroidery and maximalist cross-referencing of ukiyo-e, anime, wagara and streetwear belong to the modern revival of premium Japanese souvenir jackets. Undated and believed limited to 50 pieces, it belongs among boutique, special-order or highly restricted collector releases rather than continuous production. Its importance lies in design ambition and scarcity, a deliberate contrast between cultivated human beauty and the overwhelming force of nature, delivered with full sleeve artwork on both faces and a coherent palette on each, while remaining a functional zip-front bomber with pockets and ribbed trim.

Condition
- Very good pre-owned collector condition, with the expected characteristics of satin, reversible construction and exceptionally dense embroidery.
- Visible characteristics include natural satin creasing on both faces, mild rippling around heavily embroidered sections, gentle surface variation from the direction of the satin weave, minor compression from folded storage, fine thread texture around selected blossoms and smaller details, occasional slight embroidery irregularities, light softening to the rib-knit collar, cuffs and waistband, normal handling wear around the zipper and pocket openings, and subtle puckering where large embroidered panels meet the satin ground.
- The oiran portrait, kimono, dragon, tiger, goldfish, cherry blossoms, wave, boats and Mount Fuji remain vivid and complete; the rose-pink and teal satin keep substantial sheen and the black sections a deep ground.
- No major tears, severe stains or substantial losses to the principal embroidery are apparent in the photographed areas.
- Natural waviness and small variations in thread tension are part of a heavily embroidered satin construction rather than flaws.
- The satin changes under light: the rose sleeves can read blush, mauve or metallic pink, the teal reverse green to blue.
Fit Notes
Traditional sukajan proportions: a broad raglan shoulder line, moderately wide chest and relatively compact body, best understood as a relaxed Japanese bomber fit rather than a long Western coat. It may wear as a relaxed L on a medium frame, a closer L on a broader frame, an oversized M, a cropped or compact XL depending on torso length, or an oversized statement jacket on a smaller wearer. The dense embroidery gives more structure than a plain satin bomber; compare the measurements with a jacket you already wear comfortably.
Display Notes
Either face may be displayed independently: the oiran back as a full character illustration with a strong circular composition, the Hokusai face as a panoramic embroidered landscape, suited to a specialist sukajan collection, textile-art or anime fashion archive, Japonisme interior or shadow-box presentation. Support it on a broad padded hanger to distribute the weight of the embroidery, and avoid long exposure to direct sunlight to protect the rose-pink, teal, black and metallic thread colors.
