The Piece
The sukajan, a contraction of Yokosuka jumper, began in the postwar years as embroidered souvenir jackets made for American servicemen in Japan, pairing bomber construction with Japanese needlework. The tiger, a symbol of courage and protective strength, and the map of Japan, a direct record of time spent in the country, are among the defining motifs of those early jackets, and both appear here in reversible tattoo-art form.
