The Piece

This vintage Jean Paul Gaultier bomber borrows the form of the sukajan, the embroidered souvenir jacket that grew out of postwar Yokosuka, and fills it with motifs that move between France and Japan: the niwatori (chicken), flowers, and France and Paris references, worked in a tattoo-art embroidery style on a green ground.

The pairing is apt. In Japan the niwatori is a familiar presence in painting and textile design, while in France the rooster has long served as a national emblem, so the jacket reads as a cross-cultural dialogue rather than a simple homage.
