Two temperaments share one reversible EVISU Yamane Genes jacket. Glossy black satin carries a roaring lion in golden-brown thread, while the opposite face turns to a quilted wagara field of cranes, fans, chrysanthemums and peonies: one side roars, the other blooms.
The Piece
This vintage EVISU Yamane Genes reversible jacket joins two expressions of Japanese streetwear in one garment, equally at home as collectible streetwear, statement outerwear or wearable textile art. EVISU was founded in Osaka in 1991 and became internationally recognized for its interpretation of Japanese craftsmanship, denim culture and character-driven fashion.
The black satin side features an enormous lion head in dense golden-brown embroidery, with a radiating mane, open mouth, visible fangs and an intense amber eye. Above it runs the katakana ライオン (raion, lion) and below the stylized ガオウ (gaō, a roaring sound). The front continues the playful graphic language with appliquéd lettering and a club-like emblem, a blend of sukajan embroidery, Japanese character fashion and vintage sportswear attitude. The lion suggests strength, authority, courage and protective power, and its frontal roaring pose carries the force of tattoo art, rockabilly fashion and Japanese street culture.
The reverse is built from a colorful kimono-inspired patterned textile with visible quilted stitching: Japanese cranes, chrysanthemums and peonies, decorative fans, floral medallions, red cloud-like forms, green foliage and seasonal blossoms, with black, vermilion, coral, gold, cream and turquoise accents on a deep black and vermilion ground. The dense all-over pattern gives this side the look of a reconstructed kimono-textile bomber. Cranes are associated with longevity, good fortune and enduring partnership, chrysanthemums with refinement and seasonal beauty, making a layered field of auspicious imagery.
The construction, artwork and Yamane aesthetic are consistent with Japanese streetwear of the late 1990s to 2000s, when Japanese brands freely combined vintage American bomber shapes, sukajan embroidery, kimono-derived textiles, tattoo iconography and humorous character graphics. The result is neither a conventional military souvenir jacket nor a simple fashion bomber, but a distinctly Japanese hybrid. The jacket has the light, fluid drape typical of souvenir jackets, with a structured waist and cuff line from its substantial cream ribbing.
