A vintage Golden Lobby souvenir jacket that trades the usual dragons and tigers for military aviation: air force fighter jets embroidered on black velour, backed by a satin reverse. It belongs to the sukajan tradition that began with the embroidered souvenir jackets of postwar Japan.
The Piece
This vintage reversible sukajan by Golden Lobby combines a black velour (velvet) face with a satin reverse and takes military aviation as its subject, with embroidered air force fighter jets and aircraft. Velour sukajan offer a softer, deeper surface than the more common all-satin examples, letting the embroidery sit against a matte black ground.
The sukajan, or Yokosuka jumper, grew out of the souvenir jackets embroidered in Japan for American servicemen after the Second World War, and military imagery has long sat in its vocabulary alongside eagles, dragons, tigers and maps of Japan.
