The dragon and the roaring tiger, the oldest rivalry in Japanese decorative art, meet on this vintage Cropped Heads sukajan, joined by Mount Fuji, the snake, the turtle and the crane. Paint print and embroidery combine on a manufacturer’s size M souvenir jacket.

The Piece

This Cropped Heads sukajan gathers a full bestiary of Japanese auspicious and protective imagery: ryu, the dragon, and tora, the roaring tiger, set against Mount Fuji alongside hebi, the snake, kame, the turtle, and tsuru, the crane. The motifs are rendered in a combination of paint print and embroidery.

The pairing of dragon and tiger is a classic of the souvenir-jacket tradition that began with embroidered jackets made for servicemen in Yokosuka after the war: the dragon commands water and sky, the tiger rules the earth, and together they express balanced, opposing power.
