Before sound chips and screen-accurate resin, a child pressed a button and Bullmark's Godzilla lumbered forward, arms swinging, mouth glowing and smoke rising from its jaws. This early 1970s tinplate example, 28 cm tall, survives with its original wired controller and its graphic period box.
The Piece
This large battery-operated remote-control walking toy was produced in Japan in the early 1970s. Standing approximately 28 cm tall, the figure is built chiefly in lithographed and painted tinplate with mixed components, in an expressive green-and-black finish with flashes of red, yellow and metallic color. Its broad torso, powerful legs, long segmented tail, raised arms and pale sculpted dorsal plates form a stylized silhouette rooted in early character-toy design.
Operated from the original wired controller, Godzilla walks forward while moving its arms; the mouth incorporates an illumination feature, and the toy was engineered to produce a smoke effect from the mouth during operation. The design celebrates rather than hides its machinery: the undersides of the articulated feet reveal the wheeled walking mechanism, and visible seams and articulated sections show how a large battery-operated monster was engineered more than half a century ago. The controller is finished in brown with its original green cable.
The original box carries bold orange, yellow, red and black graphics showing a child operating Godzilla by remote control, with photographic demonstrations of the action features. Together, toy, controller and box show how the product was first presented to children and make a far richer ensemble than the figure alone.
Bullmark became one of the important names in Japanese character toys in the late 1960s and 1970s, producing monster figures, mechanical toys and licensed character merchandise, and its products are closely tied to the exuberant visual language of early Japanese monster collecting. Best known internationally for soft vinyl figures, the company also combined character design with gears, electric motors, stamped metal, lights and imaginative action features, and this remote-control Godzilla is among the most memorable examples of that side of its work.
