Bullmark Baragon Electric Walking Tin Kaiju, Metallic Green, Showa Ultraman Monster, 27 cm, No Controller

Bullmark is revered for its vinyl monsters, but its tin kaiju with remote-control walking action were the company's premium, experimental edge. This 27 cm Baragon, the cult-favorite subterranean monster, survives as a non-working display piece, its metallic green tin structure intact beneath a natural aging patina.

The Piece

This Bullmark Baragon stands at one of the most elusive intersections in Showa toy history: licensed tokusatsu kaiju rendered not in soft vinyl but in heavy-gauge tin with mechanical remote-control action. Tin Baragon examples occupy a far rarer stratum than the vinyl figures, produced in significantly smaller numbers and aimed at a premium domestic audience.

The sculpt is immediately recognizable: oversized bat-like ears, a forward-leaning posture and a thick, muscular torso that conveys subterranean power. Dark green metallic tones with subtle textural variation create a lifelike presence that reads as creature rather than toy when displayed at scale. Baragon debuted as a subterranean monster distinguished by speed, agility and exaggerated sensory features rather than size alone, and the toy captures that identity in slightly crouched legs, raised arms and an alert head that suggests movement even at rest.

Remote-controlled walking places it closer to elite mechanical kaiju such as the tin Mechagodzilla or battery-operated Ultraman-era vehicles than to standard vinyl releases, and reflects Bullmark's ambition in the late Showa period to compete in mechanical spectacle as well as character licensing. Tin kaiju production was expensive, fragile and unforgiving; combined with remote-control systems, these were aspirational toys, often heavily played with, and few survive. Electric walking kaiju required complex internal gearing, heavy-gauge tin bodies and external controllers, which were often lost.

Baragon first appeared in Frankenstein Conquers the World (1965) and was later integrated into the Ultraman kaiju ecosystem, bridging Toho cinema and television tokusatsu. Less common than Godzilla or Gamera yet deeply respected, it holds a cult-favorite position among Showa kaiju, and that status is amplified in non-standard formats such as tin. The piece is collected for presence, not play: patina, scale and silhouette carry its display power even without operation.

Electric Kaiju Trio

Among Bullmark's Showa-era mechanical monsters, three electric walking kaiju, each issued as walking tin with a controller, are usually considered together.

• Giras (Jirass): Ultraman (TV), first appearance 1966; upright reptilian silhouette with frill; very high manufacturing complexity, very low mechanical survivorship, low known production; regarded as a blue-chip electric kaiju and often the entry point to the group
• Baragon: Toho cinema, later the Ultraman ecosystem, first appearance 1965 in Frankenstein Conquers the World; stocky silhouette with ears and heavy, grounded menace; very high complexity, very low survivorship, production apparently slightly lower than Giras; regarded as upper blue-chip, with appeal to collectors who cross-collect film kaiju and Ultraman toys
• Gomora: Ultraman (TV), first appearance 1966; massive dinosaurian bulk; extremely high complexity and the lowest survivorship and production of the three; regarded as the crown tier and often the anchor of a collection
• Controllers for all three are rare, extremely so for Gomora; Giras and Baragon are often held together as a matched pair

What a Kaiju Is

Kaiju (怪獣) literally means "strange beast" or "mysterious creature": the giant monsters of Japanese film, television and popular culture. They function less as villains than as symbols, forces of nature and moral metaphors, each one a being that represents something humanity cannot fully control, whether nuclear power, war trauma, natural disaster, pollution, technological hubris or fear of the unknown.

The form emerged in post-war Japan, after Hiroshima and Nagasaki, United States nuclear testing in the Pacific and rapid industrialization. Godzilla (Gojira) came first, a living metaphor for nuclear devastation, and kaiju became a language for disaster. Unlike Western monsters, which are usually individual villains defeated once, kaiju are collective threats that return, neutral and consequential rather than evil, and their stories tend to end in uneasy balance, sacrifice or containment rather than victory. In Ultraman, kaiju are weekly, manageable fears; in Godzilla, the kaiju is the trauma itself.

• Nature-born kaiju: earth spirits, ancient creatures, natural balance gone wrong
• Science-created kaiju: nuclear mutation and experiments gone wrong, as with Godzilla and many Showa-era monsters
• Alien kaiju: invasions and external threats, common in late Showa films
• Mechanical kaiju: artificial answers to fear, as with Mechagodzilla
