A Japanese Amida Nyorai triad in gilt wood, placed in the Momoyama to Edo periods. The Amida triad is among the central images of Pure Land devotion, the Buddha of Infinite Light accompanied by two attendant bodhisattvas as a single image of welcome and refuge.
The Piece
This antique Japanese triad presents Amida Nyorai in gilt wood, dated to the Momoyama to Edo periods. In Pure Land Buddhism, Amida is the Buddha of Infinite Light and Infinite Life, whose vow promises rebirth in the Western Paradise to all who call upon him; a triad sets the Buddha between two attendant bodhisattvas so that the promise and its compassionate accompaniment are seen together.
