Raigō: Amida's Descent

Raigō (来迎), welcoming descent, is the moment at which Amida comes down from the Western Pure Land on clouds, with bodhisattvas and heavenly musicians, to receive a dying believer. Images of this moment, painted and sculpted from the Heian period onwards, are among the most beautiful works of Japanese Buddhist art, and were made to be seen at the deathbed itself.

The scene

Amida, golden, stands or sits on a cloud, his hands in the gesture of welcome. Before him Kannon kneels with a lotus pedestal to carry the soul, and Seishi joins her hands in prayer. Around them, in the fullest versions, twenty-five bodhisattvas play flutes, drums and lutes, and scatter flowers. The clouds trail behind like comets, showing the speed of their coming.

Great raigō images

  • The Twenty-five Bodhisattvas, Mount Kōya. A Heian triptych of Amida and his heavenly host, glowing with gold.
  • The Swift Descent, Chion-in. A Kamakura painting in which Amida's company sweeps diagonally down a mountainside at great speed.
  • Amida Coming over the Mountains. Amida rises like the moon behind a range of hills, a uniquely Japanese composition of the Kamakura period.

At the deathbed

A raigō painting was hung beside the dying, with five-coloured cords tied to Amida's hand so that the dying person could hold them and be drawn to the Pure Land. The regent Fujiwara no Michinaga is recorded as dying in 1027 holding such cords. Some temples re-enact the descent in a procession of masked and costumed bodhisattvas, mukaekō.

Collecting notes

  • Raigō paintings of the Edo period, often after Kamakura models, are the usual form on the market. Look for fine gold detail and gentle faces.
  • Sculpted raigō groups of Amida with kneeling attendants are rare and highly valued.
