Jurōjin

Jurōjin (寿老人), the Old Man of Longevity, is a gentle elder from Chinese Daoist tradition, embodiment of the star that grants long life. Among the Seven Lucky Gods he represents a long and peaceful old age.

Identifying Jurōjin

Jurōjin is an old man with a long white beard, usually wearing a scholar's cap and robes, leaning on a staff from which hangs a scroll. The scroll is said to record the lifespan of every being. His companion is a deer, sometimes a black deer said to be a thousand years old, and he may hold a fan or a peach of immortality.

Jurōjin and Fukurokuju

The two sages share the same star and similar attributes, and some traditions treat them as one. The simplest rule: Fukurokuju has the tall head and the crane, Jurōjin the deer and an ordinary head. Some lists of the seven gods omit Jurōjin in favour of Kichijōten.

Collecting notes

  • Jurōjin appears in netsuke, okimono, porcelain and painting, often with his deer. A deer carved with fine detail lifts a figure considerably.
  • Like Fukurokuju, he is a fitting gift for long-life celebrations.
