Godai Myōō

Godai Myōō (五大明王) are a set of five wisdom kings arranged as a mandala: Fudō at the centre and four kings at the cardinal points. Each is the wrathful emanation of one of the Five Wisdom Buddhas, and together they protect the teaching on every side. Rites before the five kings were performed at court for the safety of the realm.

The Tendai school places Ususama in the north in place of Kongōyasha.

The set at Tōji

In the lecture hall of Tōji in Kyoto, consecrated in 839, Kūkai's design places the five kings on one side of the altar, the five buddhas in the centre and five bodhisattvas on the other. They are the oldest surviving set of Godai Myōō in Japan, heavy-limbed and full of energy, and they define the type. Daigoji and other Shingon temples also keep halls dedicated to the five kings.

Collecting notes

  • Complete sets are extremely rare outside temples. Single figures from dispersed sets, especially Gōzanze and Daiitoku, occasionally appear.
  • Painted sets, often five scrolls or a single sheet, are a more accessible way to own the full mandala.
