Caring for Ceramics

Japanese ceramics range from soft, porous Raku bowls to hard porcelain decorated with enamels and gold. Each needs slightly different care, but a few principles protect them all.

Handling

  • Hold pieces by the body with both hands, never by a rim, spout, handle or lid.
  • Move one piece at a time, and set it down on a padded surface.
  • Remove lids before lifting a covered piece.

Porous and unglazed wares

Raku, Hagi, Bizen and other low fired or unglazed wares absorb water. This is part of their character, and Hagi bowls famously change colour with use.

  • Rinse a porous tea bowl in clean water before use, which helps to prevent staining.
  • Wash with water alone or very little mild detergent, as porous clay can absorb scent.
  • Dry thoroughly, upside down and then right way up, for a day or more before storing. Damp bowls put away in boxes can grow mould.

Porcelain and enamels

  • Hand wash in lukewarm water. Dishwashers wear away overglaze enamels and gold.
  • Avoid abrasive pads and strong detergents on decorated surfaces.
  • Avoid sudden temperature changes, such as pouring boiling water into a cold piece.

Repaired pieces

  • Pieces with kintsugi or older lacquer repairs should not be soaked or exposed to hot water.
  • Old repairs with glue or rivets are part of a piece's history and should be left to a specialist.

Display and storage

  • Use museum wax or putty to secure pieces on shelves, especially in areas prone to earthquakes.
  • Keep pieces away from the edges of shelves and from places where they may be knocked.
  • Store each piece wrapped in soft cloth inside its wooden box, with any pouch or fitted cloth it came with.
  • Keep the box with the piece. It often carries signatures and inscriptions that are part of the work's value.
