Aizen Myōō
Japonista Dictionary › Wisdom Kings
Aizen Myōō (愛染明王), the King of Passion, embodies a bold esoteric teaching: that desire itself, rightly understood, is the seed of awakening. His body is the red of passion and his face is fierce, yet his arrows are aimed at the human heart to turn its longing towards enlightenment. He became the patron of love and marriage, and, through a play on his name, of indigo dyers.

Identifying Aizen
Aizen is seated in full lotus, red in colour, with one face, three eyes and six arms. A lion's head rises from his crown, its mane flaring. One pair of hands draws a bow and arrow; others hold a vajra and bell, a lotus and a closed fist. Beneath his lotus throne stands a vase from which jewels spill. In a rare form, the bow is drawn upwards as if shooting at the heavens.
Desire and awakening
The Japanese name contains the word ai, love or attachment, and zen, to dye: the heart coloured by passion. Esoteric Buddhism teaches that the energy of desire need not be suppressed, only redirected, and Aizen is that transformation made visible. His popularity rose in the Kamakura period among both monks and laypeople.
In Japanese art
The seated Aizen of Saidaiji in Nara, carved by the sculptor Zen'en in the mid-thirteenth century, is the masterpiece of the type, small, intense and brilliantly coloured. Aizen paintings were widely commissioned for rites of love, harmony and prosperity.
Collecting notes
- Original red pigment survives only in traces on most older figures. Repainted surfaces are common.
- The vase beneath the lotus and the lion crown are separate elements; check that both survive.
