Who Is the Mind Behind mastermind JAPAN? A Reference
mastermind JAPAN is the Tokyo label known for its skull logo. It is also one of the harder labels to document, because the sources we could check are few and many retellings repeat the same stories. This page sets down only what a source supports and lists what we leave open.
This page belongs to the Reference Shelf of The Fashionista Bible. Dates are checked against published accounts, and where accounts disagree the page says so.
What is on the record
-
Founder. Masaaki Homma, also romanised Honma.
-
Founded. 1997, in Tokyo. Our Encyclopedia gives the same year: mastermind JAPAN.
-
Background. A retailer’s biography says he worked for years with Yohji Yamamoto before starting the label. We treat that as a retailer’s account, not an independent citation.
-
Early reach. The label gained a following in North America first, and by 2001 had more recognition and distribution in Japan.
-
Mark. The skull logo. The same biography gives no date or design detail for it.
-
Sister label. mastermind WORLD, described as more functional and made for urban life.
What we leave open
The origin of the label’s name, the origin of the skull and the details of the Yamamoto connection are retold with different details in different places, and we have not found a source we trust to settle them. Until we do, the page does not repeat any of them. A reference that is short and right is more use to a collector than a long one that is not.
Reading the skull
The brand’s punk-influenced identity and black palette are the subject of Dark Symbols, Quiet Power: mastermind JAPAN and the Skull. That essay reads the skull, the black palette and the label’s quiet power. The Ura-Harajuku circle that surrounds it is set out in Dissecting Ura-Harajuku.
Thesis Discussion
mastermind is the thesis’s case for keep. Where a brand documents little, collectors do the documenting, and the habit of keeping tags, runs and seasons is what makes a label legible years later. The page is short because the record is short, which is itself a finding.
It also shows how global cool travels. The label found its first audience in North America and was then better known in Japan by 2001, a round trip that echoes the way American Ivy and workwear came to Japan and went out again. See The Japonista Thesis.
