Tailor Toyo TT10495 is the 2003 release of the celebrated Tiger Head × Chevy Lover pairing, one of the earlier modern reproductions of the design. A green monster drives a blue hot rod across champagne-gold and purple satin; reversed, rose pink and pearl white frame a roaring tiger beneath the word “JAPAN.”
The Piece
Produced by Tailor Toyo under Toyo Enterprise as model TT10495, this jacket is documented by Japanese vintage retailers as a 2003 release in polyester satin, recreating a mid-1950s souvenir-jacket design. Tailor Toyo describes the Chevy Lover image as originating from a custom-order souvenir jacket made for an American serviceman who loved Chevrolet automobiles, a reflection of the popularity of custom-car and hot-rod culture at the time. The company has since revived the same composition in acetate under new lot numbers, including TT15052 and the 2026 aging-model TT15878, which places this example in an earlier phase of the modern sukajan revival: a reproduction of historic artwork, authentic early-2000s Japanese streetwear and, more than two decades on, a vintage Tailor Toyo archive piece in its own right.
The Chevy Lover face sets a luminous champagne-gold body, shifting from pale gold to honey and warm ivory, against deep purple raglan sleeves that move between plum, aubergine and violet. Cream racing panels edged with fine contrasting piping run from collar toward cuff, and the rib-knit trim is striped black, tan, muted red and gold. Large red letters reading “CHEVY LOVER” arch across the shoulders. Below, a green monster pilots a blue hot rod with an enormous exposed engine, wide spinning tires, a burning rear-wheel flame, trailing exhaust and smoke and motion marks, its long arm on the wheel, its elongated nose, bloodshot blue eyes, jagged teeth, red tongue and black swept-back hair forming a grotesque comic expression. The image belongs to Kustom Kulture and the Rat Fink era: car-club graphics, monster-car illustration, model kits, record sleeves, garage signs and tattoo flash, here set on the fluid form of a Japanese souvenir jacket.
On the front, mirrored skulls over crossed bones in pale ivory, silver-grey and muted champagne thread sit above purple arrow-shaped trims that point down to the angled welt pockets, leaving the back as the main event. Worn open, the tiger embroidery of the reverse can show at the center.
Reversed, the body turns rose pink and the sleeves pearl white, traced with narrow purple piping, the ribbing now dark purple, burgundy, tan and gold. Two roaring tiger heads face inward across the chest in orange and golden fur, black striping, white whiskers, prominent fangs, red mouths, pink-toned radiating threadwork and sharply defined brows and eyes, above white angled pocket trims that echo the sleeves. On the back, beneath “JAPAN,” a large tiger turns its head upward in a full roar, long white fangs, red tongue and shaded mouth exposed, built in amber gold, burnt orange, black, charcoal, white, cream, pale grey, dusty pink and crimson. Directional stitching follows brow, cheek, muzzle and neck; the eye is ringed in bold black under an exaggerated white brow, and radiating threads form a halo of fur. In Japanese art tigers were often imagined through imported paintings and stories rather than observation, which gives them this expressive, sometimes fantastical anatomy and their long association with courage, protection and untamed energy.
Both faces carry dense machine embroidery: broad color blocks with fine outlines around the car, engine, eyes, fingers, teeth and flames on one side; layered directional fur stitching, radiating effects and facial shading on the other. Champagne gold, aubergine purple, dusty rose and pearl white make a warmer, more theatrical palette than the black, green and blue colorways more commonly met in later reproductions, and neither face behaves as a lining: two jackets share one reversible structure.
