A commanding, hall-present figure of Senju Kannon, the Thousand-Armed form of Avalokiteshvara, carved in wood at approximately 120 cm. The many arms are not ornament but a visual vow, the capacity to reach in countless directions toward countless forms of suffering, framed by an openwork aura that reads as devotional architecture.
The Piece
Even at a glance the work belongs to the family of compassionate all-seeing, all-helping Avalokiteshvara images: a calm central bodice, a radiating arrangement of multiple arms and a halo-like openwork backdrop that frames the deity's still center as a moral and emotional anchor for the space.
In Japanese Buddhist material culture Senju Kannon embodies mercy expressed as capability. Each hand symbolizes an active response to suffering, guiding, protecting, lifting and rescuing, and in temple halls such figures act as a moral center of gravity. Senju Kannon images are sought for broad, practical blessings: safeguarding households, easing hardship and cultivating a steady heart through disciplined devotion.
Large Senju Kannon sculptures occupy a special tier of Japanese sacred art, devotional images with architectural presence that read at room distance and hold the gaze up close. This one suits a dedicated alcove, a private study or a gallery-like setting where it can be approached slowly, from silhouette to detail, by a collector who wants compassion to feel tangible.
