Two genuinely distinct jackets in one: a red kingyo sweeping through midnight water on black velvet, and a blue koi rising beneath moon and crane on blush-pink brocade. A vintage reversible sukajan where bold aquatic imagery meets soft pastel textile work, playful and elegant at once.
The Piece
This vintage sukajan has two dramatically different personalities. One face is deep black velvet-like fabric with vivid red-and-gold goldfish embroidery; the other is luminous blush-pink brocade with blue koi, a flying crane, moonlit scenery and floral sleeves. Rather than a decorative front with a plain lining, the reversible construction gives two complete jackets.
The darker face centers on a magnificent red kingyo, the ornamental goldfish, sweeping through stylized currents across the back, its exaggerated fins opening like silk fans in red, gold and cream embroidery against the light-absorbing black. Curving white lines suggest flowing water, scattered botanical forms add rhythm, and smaller goldfish continue onto the front so the design reads whether open or zipped. Champagne-beige satin sleeves soften the black body, with bright pink flowers trailing along both arms.
Turned inside out, the mood changes completely. The second face is blush-pink and ivory brocade woven with delicate landscape-inspired patterning. Twin blue koi cross the chest and red-pink flowers decorate the pale sleeves; on the back a larger koi rises vertically beneath a pale moon and a flying crane, surrounded by swirling water, in an upward, transformational movement. This side feels refined and dreamlike where the black face carries nighttime drama.
Goldfish are associated with beauty, abundance, celebration and pleasurable living, and their flowing fins make them a favored subject of Japanese summer imagery. Koi represent perseverance, courage and the ability to move against difficult currents, the rising posture here strengthening the theme of progress. The crane is an emblem of longevity, grace and good fortune, and with the moon it brings an atmosphere of reflection and enduring beauty, while flowers and water patterns tie the two faces together.
Reflective satin, softly textured black fabric, patterned brocade and multicolored embroidery each catch the light differently, especially across the pink woven face and champagne sleeves. The textile combination, embroidery scale, reversible construction and relaxed bomber proportions appear consistent with Japanese sukajan production of the later twentieth century, likely late Showa to early Heisei.
