Reversed, it becomes a lemon-yellow and deep navy quilted bomber: poetic Japanese maximalism on one face, streamlined retro sportswear on the other.

The Piece

The principal back is a nocturnal Japanese garden. Cherry branches in white, pale pink and crimson flowers sweep diagonally across a black satin-finish ground, with scattered petals suggesting movement in the night air, a golden crescent moon, flowing red “Japan” lettering and a red seal-style embroidered cartouche. The diagonal arrangement gives the artwork an elegant motion rather than a rigid, symmetrical layout, and turquoise-blue raglan sleeves with fine pink piping along the shoulder seams frame the scene.

Sakura are among the most enduring visual symbols of Japan; their brief season speaks of beauty, renewal and the awareness that treasured moments are temporary. Here the falling petals introduce a quiet sense of mujō, or impermanence, while the densely flowering branches celebrate life at its most vivid. The crescent moon adds stillness and mystery, turning the blossoms into a night scene and giving the jacket a more poetic, atmospheric character than the eagle, tiger and dragon designs that dominate the genre.
