Signed Teruaki, this Meiji-period metal sculpture sets a Kara Shishi guardian lion against an opening peony, the classic union of protective strength and noble beauty. Its curled mane and flaming tail reflect the casting and finishing skill that Meiji metalworkers carried into Japan's encounter with the modern world.
The Piece
The sculpture depicts a Kara Shishi, an auspicious guardian lion, in dynamic tension with a peony bloom. The pairing of shishi and botan is deeply rooted in East Asian symbolism, uniting protective power and refined beauty; the peony, long associated with wealth and nobility, anchors the composition within classical iconography.
During the Meiji era, metal sculptors elevated traditional guardian imagery into sculptural objects for elite interiors and international exhibitions. Here the musculature, curling mane and flame-like tail show mastery of casting and finishing.
The signature attribution to Teruaki situates the work within the professional artisan culture that flourished as Japan transitioned into modernity. Such works were often collected by statesmen, merchants and, later, Western connoisseurs as embodiments of Japanese artistic identity.
