Mane flaring and tail raised, this dark-patinated metal guardian lion rests a forepaw on a pierced jewel ball. A decorative Japanese okimono made for interior display, it carries the protective imagery of the temple shishi into the domestic room with movement, strength and symbolic vigilance.
The Piece
The lion's exaggerated mane, raised tail and muscular stance reflect conventions common from the late Meiji through the early Showa periods, when traditional protective imagery was adapted for domestic interiors and export-oriented decorative arts. The openwork jewel ball represents wisdom, protection and the containment of chaotic forces.
The figure emphasizes symbolic guardianship rather than ritual function and is best understood as decorative metalwork rather than shrine or temple sculpture, suited to collectors of Japanese decorative arts, traditional interiors or guardian imagery.
