Paw planted on a pierced jewel ball, this tama jishi embodies the mastery and vigilance that Japanese tradition grants the guardian lion. About 30 cm wide and cast in metal, it combines spiraling musculature, an open mouth and a raised tail under a dark patina touched with subtle color.
The Piece
This commanding Japanese metal shishi sculpture presents the guardian lion in a moment of poised dominance, standing firmly as it controls a ball beneath its paw. The composition conveys protection, authority and vigilance, qualities long associated with shishi imagery in Japanese decorative arts.
The musculature is rendered with flowing curves and stylized spirals, while the open mouth and lifted tail create a sense of motion and alertness. Beneath the forepaw rests a pierced ball, intricately worked with layered openwork patterns that add visual depth and symbolic resonance.
In Japanese tradition, shishi figures serve as protective talismans believed to ward off misfortune while inviting stability and strength; the ball motif further emphasizes mastery and balance, suggesting control over unseen forces. Cast in metal with a darkened patina accented by subtle color variation, the sculpture has a weight and scale that give it substantial presence, suited to collectors of Japanese metalwork and prominent interior display.
