One paw set upon an openwork jewel ball, mane and tail sculpted for maximum presence, this green-patinated guardian lion translates the temple shishi into a decorative object for the home. Likely made in the mid-to-late Showa period, it carries the retro character of Japanese metalwork of its time.
The Piece
The figure takes the classic shishi pose, one paw resting on an openwork jewel ball as a sign of protection and authority. Finished in a green patinated surface, it reflects retro Japanese metalwork aesthetics inspired by traditional temple guardians.
Intended as an interior decorative object rather than a ritual artifact, the lion relies on the expressive modeling of its mane, tail and muscular form for visual impact and symbolic presence. Shishi, the lion-dogs of Japanese tradition, have long guarded the thresholds of shrines and temples; here the motif is scaled for a console, cabinet or entryway.
