A rare Meiji-period hand-carved Noh mask representing Ikaku Sen’nin (一角仙人)—the enigmatic “One-Horn Immortal” of classical Japanese performance arts. Sculpted with deep expression, aged lacquer tones, and dramatic asymmetry, this mask captures the supernatural intensity and folkloric mythology that define the Noh tradition. A powerful, culturally significant artifact ideal for collectors of Japanese theatre, early woodcraft, and Meiji-era arts.

DESCRIPTION

This Ikaku Sen’nin Noh mask is a compelling example of early traditional carving, featuring the distinctive single horn and the tense, contorted facial expression associated with this supernatural character. The Meiji era (1868–1912) saw a revival of interest in classical performing arts, and masks produced in this period often display a transitional aesthetic—rooted in Edo traditions yet pushing toward more dramatic anatomical realism.

The mask exhibits a warm ochre-toned lacquer surface, softened by time, with expressive carving around the eyes and mouth. The slight asymmetry in the eyes, the open mouth revealing clenched teeth, and the upward tilt of the horn create an emotional tension that is characteristic of higher-caliber workshop production.

Chisel marks on the reverse reveal hand-tool practice rather than any form of molded reproduction. The interior patination shows consistent oxidation and color shifting typical of Meiji-era wooden masks.

The accompanying textile mask bag (面袋) is woven in a traditional brocade style, further enhancing the integrity and collectible completeness of this piece. Its presence makes the item not only artistically valuable but also historically sound, as most functional Noh masks were stored in textile pouches before tomobako usage became widespread.

This is an evocative, display-worthy mask that combines performing-arts history, expressive sculpture, and Japanese folklore in one striking form.

HERITAGE

Noh theatre, one of Japan’s oldest and most refined performing arts, relies heavily on masterfully carved masks that embody archetypal emotions, spirits, and legendary figures. Artisan workshops through the Edo and Meiji periods upheld centuries-old carving traditions, creating masks that were both functional stage tools and works of sacred sculpture. Characters like Ikaku Sen’nin, drawn from folklore and supernatural mythology, highlight the richness of Noh’s narrative world. Each mask carries not just visual identity but cultural lineage, linking performer and audience to centuries of artistic history.
