Few Louis Vuitton travel bags announce themselves like the M92640. On a deep black ground the LV initials and Monogram flowers erupt in color, while studded vachetta straps and trunk-inspired fittings give this 2003 Keepall 45 far more ornament and architecture than a conventional Keepall, a defining object of the Marc Jacobs and Takashi Murakami era.

The Piece

Against the Noir canvas, the familiar motifs appear in pink, blue, yellow, green, orange, violet and white, with turquoise, red and purple scattered between them. No single color dominates; the repeated Monogram becomes a field of shifting color that changes as the bag is viewed from different angles. Unlike the lighter Blanc treatment, Noir sharpens the contrast so the motifs appear almost illuminated.

Rather than abandoning the Monogram, Murakami transformed its color system, keeping the historic symbols while creating an entirely new identity. The resulting Monogram Multicolore family became one of the most recognizable signatures of the Marc Jacobs era, and the M92640 applies it to a substantial travel silhouette rather than a compact accessory.

The M92640 is considerably more elaborate than a standard Keepall. Natural vachetta straps run vertically across the body, punctuated by polished gold-tone studs; decorative lock-inspired fittings sit across the front; leather corners add structure; and double rolled handles rise above the double-zip top. The effect is less a soft duffel than a miniature interpretation of Vuitton trunk-making adapted to a flexible travel bag.

The vachetta of the handles, straps, trim, luggage tag and poignet has developed a warm honey-toned patina, a softer counterpoint to the black canvas, and gold-tone hardware distributed through studs, closures and zipper fittings bridges canvas and leather. Inside, a large central compartment with flap-style pockets suits travel essentials and clothing.

It is extravagant but disciplined: color everywhere, hardware everywhere, the straps dividing the canvas and the black ground holding the composition together. For collectors drawn to the more dramatic side of Monogram Multicolore, Noir is particularly compelling, as functional luggage or as an archive display piece.
