Standing 77 cm tall, this Kutani-style figure of a robed sage with a staff-like attribute is built to impress at a distance and reward close inspection. Layered enamels, gilt accents and repeating motifs cover the garments in an idiom of visual abundance rather than restraint.
The Piece
This large Japanese polychrome ceramic figure is executed in a Kutani-style decorative idiom. It depicts a robed male subject holding a staff-like attribute, rendered with expressive facial features and densely patterned garments. The figure is presented as Daruma, though its iconography equally fits the scholar and immortal figures of East Asian art.
The surface is richly enameled with layered colors, gilt accents and repeating motifs typical of Kutani-inspired ornamental ware. The emphasis is visual abundance: color, pattern and surface animation combine to create strong presence, as monumental ceramic figures tend to favor scale and surface richness.
Figures of this size were often produced as statement display objects for interiors, reception rooms or collector settings, where scale and decoration were meant to impress at a distance as well as reward close inspection.
