The Piece

Identified in Japanese as EVISU カスタムメイド 総柄ジャケット (EVISU Custom Made all-over pattern jacket), this piece transforms the entire body, sleeves, pockets and back into a continuous collage of oversized Japanese folk-art faces, exaggerated godhead characters, oni-like creatures, vivid greenery, ornamental patterns and flashes of orange, red, blue and black. It reads somewhere between a festival banner, an underground manga panel, Japanese advertising art and wearable textile collage, and even by EVISU standards it is wonderfully eccentric.

There is almost no blank ground. Large bald or tonsured-looking heads with broad cheeks, narrow eyes, moustaches and expressive mouths, a vocabulary EVISU has long used, overlap with gray and green oni-like faces with large orange eyes and exaggerated mouths, leafy forms, eyes, mouths and ornamental fabrics. Some figures appear serene, others comic, some deliberately grotesque; they read less as portraiture than as festival masks, folk caricatures and theatrical faces, like a crowded Japanese festival where benevolent characters, demons and comic spirits share one world. The artwork continues across seams and panels, so each part of the jacket becomes a cropped fragment of a larger field, and every viewing angle makes a new composition.

The back may be the strongest view: a deep red geometric textile pattern with repeating Japanese-style emblems runs across the upper yoke, and below it huge overlapping faces, a central smiling figure flanked by more distorted characters and intense green foliage, fill nearly the whole panel, cut by the vertical seams like a reconstructed poster. The front is more fragmented, with facial sections across shoulder, upper chest, pockets, lower body, sleeves and placket in an asymmetric arrangement. One chest pocket in dark contrast textile carries EVISU's curved Kamome seagull, a signature plaque that inverts the brand's habit of painting the mark across the back pockets of jeans.

The construction draws the piece back toward EVISU's denim and workwear heritage. Dark indigo / black denim-style material is placed at the collar, cuffs, waistband, chest pocket, a large dark oval elbow patch on one sleeve and small reinforced sections, bringing order to the artwork. Rather than two simple trucker pockets, the front has multiple layered pockets of different sizes, each flap interrupting the image so the jacket almost looks patchworked. The palette runs through spring green, emerald, cream, orange, vermilion, cobalt blue, soft pink, black, dark indigo, gray and yellow on a pale ground, with green dominant. The elaborate print placement and contrast construction place it on the experimental side of EVISU collecting, far from ordinary logo merchandise.

Fit Notes

Despite the tagged S, the jacket has the broad, slightly boxy architecture of Japanese workwear and vintage trucker jackets: moderately cropped, structured through the shoulders, straight through the torso, with full-length sleeves, suited to a fitted-to-regular archive silhouette rather than contemporary oversized proportions. Japanese tagged sizing can differ substantially from US and European sizing; compare with a jacket you already own.

Another measurement image appears to show approximately 56 cm across an upper-body section, but because the measuring method is not fully visible, the length, sleeve and chest figures in Details are the primary reference.

Worn with plain black trousers and a white shirt, the jacket becomes the entire outfit; with Japanese denim, boots and other archive pieces it joins a maximalist Amekaji look. On a hanger the back already works as textile art, and displayed flat the pattern is easier still to read.
