Dior's equestrian Saddle meets the psychedelic cartoon universe of New York artist Kenny Scharf. Woven in dense multicolor jacquard rather than printed, the imagery bends with the bag's asymmetric curves, so the piece reads less as a decorated accessory than as wearable contemporary art from the Maison's 2021 collaboration.
The Piece
Created for the Dior × Kenny Scharf collaboration of 2021 (SS21), this Saddle body bag turns one of the Maison's most recognizable forms into a dense field of cartoon-like creatures, exaggerated eyes, biomorphic forms and saturated psychedelic color. The familiar equestrian curve remains unmistakably Dior, but almost every visible surface has been overtaken by Scharf's exuberant imagery; the result feels at once luxurious, playful and visually radical, and it occupies a space between luxury fashion and contemporary art.
Scharf's imagery has always thrived on movement. Eyes, mouths, spirals, amoebic bodies and extraterrestrial cartoon forms crowd the jacquard, so the composition never settles: yellow and green figures push against pink, red and blue shapes, black outlines give definition, and cream and metallic tones break up the saturation. Playful at first glance, the imagery carries a strange science-fiction undertone, and that tension between cartoon exuberance and surreal density is central to his work.
Originally inspired by equestrian equipment, the Saddle is defined by an asymmetrical curved body and a distinctive flap. Those curves suit Scharf's fluid visual language: rather than sitting on top of the bag, the artwork seems to bend naturally with its architecture. Many designer collaborations simply add artwork to an existing product; here object and image share the same visual DNA, and the bag feels intentionally designed rather than merely decorated. That cohesion is its strongest argument.
The imagery is executed in jacquard rather than as a flat surface print, which gives the artwork visible texture and dimensional character and reinforces the art-object quality of the bag. Black trim and strap elements frame the composition, while silver-tone hardware introduces a cooler metallic counterpoint to the intense palette. At approximately 26 × 19 × 4.5 cm (10.2 × 7.5 × 1.8 in) the bag is compact enough for daily crossbody wear while keeping a strong sculptural presence, and the adjustable strap, approximately 104–125 cm (40.9–49.2 in), allows shoulder or crossbody styling.
Kenny Scharf became associated with the New York art scene of the 1980s, alongside artists who dissolved the boundaries between gallery art, graffiti, nightlife, cartoons and popular culture; his visual universe combines bright color, science-fiction energy and exaggerated cartoon imagery. The Dior collaboration places that vocabulary inside the formal language of luxury fashion, which is why the bag speaks to collectors whose interests cross Dior, contemporary and street art, New York art history, designer collaborations, archival fashion and wearable art.
