The Piece

Spring/Summer 2025 found Yohji Yamamoto in a sculptural, almost botanical mood, building garments that seem to grow outward from the body. The Motif Big Coat is one of the season's most recognisable pieces: a long, generous coat in loosely woven black linen covered with free-standing motifs that lift away from the surface as the wearer moves.

Each motif is a separate, irregular disc, some in matte charcoal and grey cloth, others in a silvered metallic finish, stitched on at one point and left to curl, fold and catch the light. They cluster around the shoulders, sleeves and hem and thin out across the body, so the coat reads differently from every angle. The linen itself is open enough to show the light through, which keeps a dramatic piece surprisingly airy.

The cut is the house's big, straight coat: dropped shoulders, long sleeves, a simple collar and a single-breasted front with concealed buttons, falling well below the knee. Worn open over a black dress or wide trousers it moves like a cape; buttoned, it becomes a column of texture.

This example has been tried on only. It carries the mainline Yohji Yamamoto label and is a size 2, which in this oversized cut will suit a wide range of builds. The wearing images show the coat on, to give a sense of its length and volume.
