A three-button blazer cut entirely in deep cherry-red cowhide, with hand-picked edges and a cotton and cupro lining, from an earlier era of Pour Homme labels.
The Piece
Leather tailoring has a long history at Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme, and red leather a particular one: it appears again and again as the single flash of colour in a black wardrobe. This blazer, with its early label style and composition tag, is believed to date from the late 1990s or early 2000s.
It is cut in smooth cowhide in a deep cherry red that has softened with age, as a straightforward three-button, single-breasted jacket with notch lapels, a chest welt, flap pockets and a single back vent. The lapels and front edges are finished with visible pick stitching. Inside, a grey-green cotton and cupro lining with an inside pocket.
The Yohji Yamamoto Pour Homme label is inside, size 3, made in Japan, with product code HT-J70-701.
It wears like a classic sports jacket with a natural shoulder and a straight body, a little longer than a modern blazer. With black trousers and a white shirt, it is a statement in its own right. Leather tailoring of this kind was made in small numbers and has rarely survived in wearable condition, since coloured leather shows every year of use. This one has aged honestly, with the depth of colour that only time gives to dyed cowhide.
