A cropped rider jacket from Yohji Yamamoto womenswear, translating the classic motorcycle shape into soft black wool with a wide collar and a belted hem.
The Piece
The motorcycle jacket is a recurring subject for Yohji Yamamoto, who has redrawn it many times in leather, gabardine and wool. In this womenswear version the familiar asymmetric front is softened and enlarged, made in a dense wool and nylon cloth rather than hide.
The collar is broad, with wide notched lapels that can be worn open or snapped closed, and the front fastens with an off-centre two-way zip. A belt runs across the hem and fastens with snaps, while slanted zipped pockets sit at the body. The back is cut full through the shoulders and gathered into the belt, giving a short, rounded silhouette.
The sleeves are long, with a plain turned cuff, and the jacket is fully lined in cupro. The cloth has a gently brushed, felted surface that gives it the warmth of a coat while keeping the jacket light.
Cropped at the waist, it pairs naturally with long skirts and wide trousers, the classic Yohji proportion. Autumn and winter womenswear; the year is not recorded on the label.
