A reversible souvenir jacket from WILDSIDE Yohji Yamamoto and the illustrator Izumonster, embroidered with Showa-era monsters on black satin on one side and on quilted ivory silk on the other.

The Piece

The sukajan, the embroidered souvenir jacket born around the American bases of postwar Japan, has become one of the country's most collected garments. WILDSIDE, the Yohji Yamamoto label that collaborates with artists and subcultural figures, has given the form a new turn with Izumonster, the Japanese illustrator known for his bold, heavy-lined kaiju drawings.

One face is black rayon and cotton satin with ivory piping down the sleeves and ivory-striped ribbing. The chest carries two monster heads, one stitched in fine white line and one in ivory satin stitch, and the back a full kaiju figure under the WILDSIDE Japan arc, flanked by the dates 1964 and 2026 and smaller creatures. Reverse it and the jacket becomes quilted ivory silk with black ribbing, the same motifs worked in vermilion embroidery.

The interior label reads WILDSIDE Yohji Yamamoto; the jacket is size 3 and made in Japan. It closes with a two-way zip on the black side and a concealed placket on the ivory side.

The fit is a classic souvenir blouson: roomy body, raglan sleeves and a cropped length that sits at the hip. Worn black side out with jeans it is a modern souvenir jacket; turned to the ivory silk, it becomes lighter and more ceremonial. Collaborations of this kind are produced in small runs and tend to disappear quickly, especially in clean, unworn condition.
