Raf Simons AW2018 Reversible Down Parka 182-710 with DRUGS Patches, Camel and Black, Size 46, Unworn with Tags

The reversible down parka from Raf Simons’s autumn-winter 2018 drug-culture collection, unworn with tags: camel shell on one side, black wool on the other, each with its own removable DRUGS patch.

The Piece

Raf Simons’s autumn-winter 2018 show in New York looked at youth and intoxication through Christiane F., the 1981 film of Berlin’s teenage drug scene, and through the downtown New York of the 1980s. Its outerwear, oversized and loaded with patches, became instantly recognisable, and the reversible DRUGS parka is the collection’s signature coat.

One face is a camel technical shell, heavily quilted, with two hook-and-loop chest flap pockets, a further chest pocket, a black buckled waist belt, a waist drawcord and lower pockets, plus a removable orange DRUGS patch. Turned inside out it becomes a clean black wool parka with no pockets and a removable yellow DRUGS patch. Both patches are printed Cookie Mueller and Glenn O’Brien, the writer and the critic of the downtown scene. A double-zip front, a fixed hood and a hem drawcord serve both sides. The fill is 90% down, 10% feather.

Tagged 46 and cut very large, at 65 cm across the shoulder and 105 cm long, it falls to the knee with real warmth. This example is new, never worn, with its hang tags; the original Japanese retail price was ¥822,800.

Most surviving DRUGS parkas have been worn hard through several winters; finding one new with its tags in a wearable size 46 is unusual. As a reversible coat with two complete personalities, it is also one of the most practical statement pieces Raf Simons made, and an anchor for any collection of his New York seasons.
