A Raf Simons shirt-jacket blown up to coat proportions, in black cotton twill over an ivory quilted lining, attributed to the autumn-winter 2017 season of his New York period.
The Piece
From 2017 Raf Simons showed his own label in New York, and the clothes of those seasons played with American workwear and the uniforms of youth. The overshirt, a staple he had reworked since the late 1990s, was cut ever larger until the line between shirt and coat disappeared.
This piece keeps the details of a classic shirt: a pointed collar, a buttoned placket, a back yoke and barrel cuffs. The body is a fine black cotton twill with a subtle herringbone texture, and the inside is fully lined in an ivory quilted viscose and cupro that gives warmth without bulk. Its extreme width, with a dropped shoulder at 73.5 cm and 92 cm pit to pit, turns it into a light coat that reaches the upper thigh.
The composition label confirms production in Italy, and the season is attributed from the accompanying notes; the size label is not present, so please go by the measurements, which suit most frames from a regular medium upward as an intentionally oversized fit.
It is the kind of Raf Simons piece that earns its place through daily use: easy to throw over a hoodie, warm enough for a cool autumn, and recognisable to those who know the house by its proportions alone. The ivory quilting, glimpsed at the cuffs and front when open, gives it a quietly expensive finish.
