A naval pea coat rewritten by Raf Simons for autumn-winter 2010, in dense navy melton with silver snaps scattered across the front and back like a constellation.

The Piece

Before the oversized proportions of his later work, Raf Simons was known for exact, slender tailoring, and the pea coat was one of the garments he returned to most often. The autumn-winter 2010 version keeps the naval essentials of a broad lapel, a double-breasted front and flap pockets, then disrupts them with a single idea.

Instead of buttons the coat fastens with silver snaps, set in irregular clusters rather than tidy rows, and a further group is placed at the back waist where a half-belt would normally sit. The effect is subtle at a distance and precise up close. The cloth is 100% wool melton in a deep navy, lined in a cupro-type twill, and the coat is made in Italy.

Tagged 44, it is cut close and short, ending at the hip, with a clean shoulder and a narrow sleeve. It suits a slim build or anyone wanting the trim, early-2010s Raf Simons line.

The snap constellation is one of those Raf Simons details that rewards close attention and makes a plain navy coat feel entirely of its maker.
