A two-layer sleeveless column from Pleats Please, its aqua outer shell printed with naturalist plates of lobsters, crabs and seashells over a sheer white pleated underdress.
The Piece
The natural-history prints are a quiet thread through the Pleats Please archive, borrowing the language of nineteenth-century scientific illustration: labelled specimens, careful shading, a pale ground. This dress, believed to date from around 2017, applies that idea to sea life, with Latin captions beneath purple lobsters, golden cowries and spiny murex shells.
Construction is the interesting part. A narrow sleeveless outer dress in pastel aqua sits over a separate white inner dress, also pleated, which shows at the armholes and extends a couple of centimetres past the hem. The print on the outer layer is faintly visible through the inner, so the two read as a single garment with depth.
It wears long and straight, close to the ankle on most heights, and the layering gives the piece more presence than a single-layer column.
