A fragment of fashion history reworked: Yasumasa Morimura's 1996 Guest Artist Series No.1 print for Pleats Please, converted from a dress into a long pleated skirt.
The Piece
In 1996 Issey Miyake invited the photographer Yasumasa Morimura to open the Pleats Please Guest Artist Series. Morimura, known for inserting himself into famous paintings, supplied his restaged version of Ingres's celebrated water-bearer nude, which was printed across pleated garments with bright solid backs. The series is held by museums including the National Gallery of Victoria and the FIDM Museum, and it marks the moment Pleats Please became a canvas for contemporary art.
This piece began life as a Series No.1 dress and has since been converted into an ankle-length skirt with an elastic waist. The front shows the figure's torso and the cascade of red draped fabric; the back is the vivid orange solid, with a sepia band at the side seam.
It wears straight and close, and because the conversion keeps the print intact it remains a legible, wearable piece of the series at a fraction of the presence of a museum example.
