A navy velveteen souvenir jacket embroidered entirely in white: a great eagle over pines under Japan on the back, eagles on the chest and dragons climbing both sleeves, reversing to ivory satin.
From Occupation Bases to Collector Cabinets
The souvenir jacket was born in the years after 1945, when American servicemen stationed in Japan began commissioning embroidered satin jackets from local tailors near the bases, Yokosuka above all, which gave the garment its Japanese nickname, sukajan, from Yokosuka and jumper. The motifs were chosen for an American eye: tigers, eagles, dragons, Mount Fuji and the word Japan in looping script, stitched by craftsmen who had worked on kimono and obi embroidery before the war.
The Korean War of 1950 to 1953 turned the souvenir jacket into a record of service. Men on rest and recuperation leave in Japan ordered jackets with maps of Japan and Korea, city names and unit details, and the jackets went home as keepsakes. Original 1950s examples survive in far smaller numbers than the reproductions that followed, and collectors read them by their details: reversible construction, hand-guided embroidery, rayon or acetate satin and velveteen, and the zip makers of the period, TTS among the most sought after.
Velveteen and the Later 1950s
As the souvenir trade matured through the 1950s, velveteen joined satin as a standard cloth. Its soft pile gave embroidery a sculpted look, and white or gold thread on navy or black became a favourite combination. The arrival of Japanese-made zips such as YKK in place of earlier makers helps date these later jackets.
The Piece
Velveteen, betchin in Japanese, was the second classic cloth of the souvenir jacket, warmer than satin and with a deep pile that makes monochrome embroidery glow. This jacket keeps to a single colour, white silk-look thread on navy, which gives it a graphic, almost engraved quality.
The back carries Japan in script above a large eagle gripping a pine branch, its feathers built up in long, dense stitches. A pair of eagles faces off across the chest, and white dragons twist down both sleeves. The rib knits are cream.
Inside, the reverse is ivory satin with a tonal embroidered motif and Japan script, shown in the third photograph. The zip is a brass YKK type, consistent with the later 1950s to 1960s.
Measured flat: chest 51 cm, length 54 cm, sleeve from centre back 81 cm. It is cut short and suits a modern small.
