Bondage trousers from Junya Watanabe's celebrated Spring/Summer 2003 parachute collection, in olive-khaki cotton wrapped with adjustable harness straps, D-rings and a quick-release buckle.

The Piece

Spring/Summer 2003 is one of the defining collections of Junya Watanabe's career, remembered as the parachute season. He described the straps as coming from bags and climbing packs: adjustable, practical and utilitarian, used to make clothes look as if a backpack had just been taken off them. Pieces from the collection are now held by major museum costume collections and remain among the most sought-after in his archive.

These trousers are a pure expression of the idea. Webbing straps in matching olive cotton cross the front and back, joined by a black quick-release buckle, D-rings and slider adjusters, and continue down the legs to the hems. Pull the straps tighter and the long, flared legs ruche up and gather; loosen them and the trousers fall straight. Feminine volume and military hardware meet in the same garment.

Product code VI-P051, dated AD2002 on the care label, size S (an export-standard size, slightly larger than the domestic equivalent), 100% cotton including the tapes, made in Japan by Comme des Garçons. The military-style cotton reads olive or dark brown depending on the light.

They sit at the natural waist with a regular rise. Wear them with a simple fitted top or a cropped jacket so that the straps take centre stage.
