An early Junya Watanabe MAN and The North Face reversible down jacket from AW2009, one side ochre cotton canvas with brown corduroy trims, the other glossy red nylon.
The Piece
The Junya Watanabe MAN and The North Face partnership has run for well over a decade, and its early seasons are the hardest to find. AW2009 pieces carry a workwear accent that later collaborations moved away from, borrowing the colours and trims of American hunting jackets and grafting them on to North Face down construction.
This jacket is fully reversible. The first face is an ochre cotton and nylon canvas with dark brown corduroy collar, pocket flaps, cuff tabs and elbow patches, closed with snaps and finished with a tonal embroidered North Face logo at the chest. Turn it inside out and it becomes a classic glossy red nylon down jacket with an ochre hood lining, zip chest pocket and slanted hand pockets. The detachable hood carries the same two-tone treatment.
The care label carries the product code WD-J101, made in Japan, with a filling of 72 per cent down, 20 per cent rayon and 8 per cent feather. The blue North Face and Junya Watanabe MAN label sits at the neck.
Tagged XS, it measures 44 cm across the shoulders and 52 cm pit to pit with a 67 cm length. It suits a men's extra small to small, or a woman who prefers a slightly boxy fit.
