A Junya Watanabe biker from the AD2023 autumn-winter season, its classic asymmetric zip front dissolving below the waist into a cascade of pointed panels and hanging straps, worn barely if at all.

The Piece

Junya Watanabe has returned to the motorcycle jacket more often than to almost any other garment, treating its fixed vocabulary of lapels, snaps and diagonal zip as a frame to be stretched, sliced and rebuilt. The autumn-winter 2023 collection pushed that idea towards something almost architectural, with black synthetic leather cut and suspended so that a familiar silhouette reads as sculpture from across a room.

This example keeps the recognisable top half intact: notched biker lapels with snap studs, a silver asymmetric zip and a cinched, belted waist with a squared steel buckle. Below the belt the body breaks into long handkerchief points and narrow ribbons of the same material, while the sleeves fall away into winged, open panels backed with perforated mesh. The surface carries the soft sheen of polyurethane-coated fabric, lined throughout in polyester.

Product code JM-J01 series, dated AD2023 on the care label and made in Japan by Comme des Garçons. The cut is close at the shoulder and dramatic everywhere else; it sits best over a fine knit or a slim dress, letting the hem and sleeves move freely.

It is the kind of piece that defines a season in hindsight: theatrical, technically demanding to produce, and made in small numbers for the women’s line.
