A Junya Watanabe Autumn/Winter 2023 vest that borrows from the angler, the climber and the despatch rider, cut in black faux leather with white topstitching, drawstring gusset pockets and turn-lock flaps.
The Piece
Junya Watanabe's Autumn/Winter 2023 womenswear dwelt on equipment: packs, harnesses and gear dismantled and rebuilt into clothing. Alongside the large coats came smaller, sharply engineered pieces like this vest, which compresses the whole idea into a single garment.
Model JL-J007, dated AD2023, is cut in a black polyurethane-coated synthetic leather with a soft grain and contrasting white stitching. A two-way zip runs down the front, flanked by panels that open into drawstring gusset pockets with gold-tone eyelets. Small flap pockets close with turn-locks, the shoulders carry adjustable straps with metal buckles, and the back is a smooth panel with a buckled strap and a row of hardware at the hem. The interior is lined in polyester and cotton.
The vest is long in the body and fitted, so it can be worn over a fine knit or a white shirt, or alone in warmer months. The hardware is substantial and the leather-look surface takes the light like real hide.
Watanabe's utility vests are among the most practical pieces in his runway vocabulary, and this one is a clear expression of the season's ideas.
