Gianni Versace 1990s Medusa Coin Chain Belt, Gold Tone, 89 cm, Made in Italy

A long run of large Medusa coins joined by fluted bars, finished with a hanging Medusa drop: the Gianni Versace chain belt that defined the house’s runway silhouette in the early 1990s.

The Piece

Few accessories say early-1990s Versace as clearly as the coin belt. Slung low over a silk shirt or a bodycon dress, it appeared on the runway and in campaigns throughout the supermodel years, turning the Medusa medallion into a piece of armour.

This belt is made of more than twenty domed coins, each with a Medusa in high relief inside a Greek key border, linked by ribbed gold-tone bars. It fastens with a sprung hook into any of the open square links at the end, so the fit is adjustable, and a single Medusa coin swings from the tail. The back of the fastening plate is stamped Gianni Versace Made in Italy in the signature script.

At about 89 cm overall and 3 cm across it sits on the hip or at the waist depending on how it is hooked. It can also be wrapped twice and worn as a statement necklace, which is how many collectors now style it.
