Ficce Uomo Yoshiyuki Konishi 1990s Wool Jacquard Sweater, Arabesque Pattern, Teal Red and Saffron, Size M

A 1990s Ficce Uomo crewneck by Yoshiyuki Konishi, knitted in a dense arabesque of teal, scarlet, saffron and violet with striped rib trims at the neck, cuffs and hem.

The Piece

Yoshiyuki Konishi made Ficce the loudest knitwear in Japan. Working in multi-yarn jacquards at a time when Tokyo menswear was flush with money and theatre, his sweaters became a signature of the bubble years and are now collected overseas alongside the best-known textured knits of the era.

This Ficce Uomo crewneck is worked in a symmetrical arabesque, almost like a Persian tile or an ikat textile: teal and black grounds carry red and saffron lozenges, violet accents and gold leaf-forms. Neck, cuffs and hem are finished in a narrow multicolour stripe of orange, red and olive, which frames the pattern neatly. The yarn is mainly wool with nylon and a little cotton, so it is warm without the heft of a pure Shetland.

The neck carries the black Yoshiyuki Konishi label stitched in gold, with the Ficce Uomo Medium tag and Made in Japan. The composition tag carries the reference YLCK-12.

The cut is generous and slightly dropped at the shoulder, so it wears easily over a shirt. It is the sort of piece that works with plain black or indigo and very little else.
