An eYe Junya Watanabe MAN take on the Alpha Industries MA-1, its sage nylon shell cut open to reveal the famous rescue-orange lining as panels on the chest, back and cuffs.
The Piece
The MA-1 is the most copied flight jacket of the twentieth century, and Alpha Industries, which supplied it to the United States Air Force, remains its definitive maker. Junya Watanabe’s eYe line has reworked it several times, and this version plays with the jacket’s best-known secret: the orange lining, designed to be turned outward by a downed pilot as a rescue signal.
Watanabe brings that orange to the outside. The sage shell is inset with orange nylon at the chest pockets, at the shoulder blades and as bands above the cuffs, so the jacket appears half reversed. The classic details remain: knit collar, cuffs and hem, the zipped utility pocket on the sleeve, snap-flap hand pockets and the red Alpha Industries pull tab.
Size XS is cut in the full, padded MA-1 manner, so it suits a slim small wearer and can take a light knit underneath.
