A runway jacket from Comme des Garçons Homme Plus Spring/Summer 2018: a navy houndstooth blazer rebuilt with leopard and tiger-stripe pile panels and hanging straps, worn long and open.
The Piece
Spring/Summer 2018 was one of Rei Kawakubo's most exuberant Homme Plus shows: models walked a rainbow-lit runway in sequins, glitter and clashing animal prints, a collection remembered as a party in clothes. This jacket appeared in the show, worn open over a pale shirt.
It starts as a navy single-breasted blazer in a fine houndstooth weave with a notch lapel. Down both front edges Kawakubo has sewn deep, plush panels in leopard print and fluorescent tiger stripes in red, orange, pink and yellow, which continue round the hem into flared peplum-like flaps. Long navy straps hang from the hem, and the back is lined with the same animal pile.
The tailoring underneath is classic Homme Plus, cut slim through the shoulder, so the jacket wears like a blazer that has been taken over by costume.
