An early Rei Kawakubo knit dress attributed to autumn-winter 1983, heavy ribbed wool brushed with lavender paint-stroke prints, from the era that redrew fashion in black.
The Piece
Comme des Garçons arrived in Paris in 1981 and, within two seasons, the press had a name for what Rei Kawakubo was showing: the shock of black. Knitwear was at the centre of that revolution, dark, sculptural and deliberately unpolished. This dress is attributed to autumn-winter 1983, a season that sits squarely in that founding period.
It is a long pullover dress in a substantial cardigan-rib wool, in a near-black navy, with full balloon sleeves gathered into ribbed cuffs. Across the front, irregular lavender marks look as though they were dragged on with a dry brush, a print that predates the painted knits Kawakubo returned to in the early 1990s.
The original Comme des Garçons labels and composition tag are present, 100 percent wool, product code GN-050200. The rib knit has natural stretch and sits a little longer and looser on the body than the flat measurements suggest.
Worn as a dress with flat shoes, or over trousers as a long tunic, it carries the quiet authority of the early collections. Pieces from 1982 to 1984 in this condition are increasingly difficult to find.
